Open plan living room, kitchen and workspace

Project: Jonas IJburg Amsterdam

What a project this was. A new-build apartment in the sustainable Jonas building in Amsterdam, overlooking the water. The layout of the apartment was still to be determined and this South-African couple wanted an open plan living room, kitchen and workspace. All these functionalities in one room calls for a tailor-made room divider. And that’s how we designed it. 

We chose a color scheme of 7 colors in total for the entire apartment, which together form a beautifully coherent whole, reminiscent of nature and culture in South Africa as well as the history of the Netherlands and the canals in Amsterdam. For the living room, kitchen and workspace we choose to use the color White clay from the Vestingh LAB paint Neutrals collection for most of the walls in this space. This in combination with the beautiful contrast of the bright blue, which has bee used for the furniture (among others the Moooi Monster dining chairs and Hana wingback swivel armchair upholstered with denim indigo fabric)  and accesoires in Delfts blue. A walnut floor (Tarkett floors) will be laid throughout the house, which will bring back the warm brown hue in all rooms. The same dark tone of wood will be used for the kitchen cabinets, shutters (Veneta) and room divider. The backdrop of the kitchen will be covered with the Arte All’ombra dei cipressi midnight dream wall paper, whcih perfectly ties all of the colors together. (Text will continue below the images.)

The materials we chose for the apartment had a natural and pure appearance are combined with luxurious upholstery with beautiful patterns and textures. Also sustainability has been taken into account as much as possible in the use of materials. In addition, the upholstery choices took into account the use of natural materials, such as cotton, linen and wool. The carpet from Andrew Martin in the living room area is a combination of wool and cotton. The carpet in the dining area from 54Kibo a combination of wool and bamboo silk.Custom made pillows from Zoffany fabrics, consisting of cotton and linnen. The kitchen counter top is made of (perfect white) composite stone. A gorgeous combination with the dark walnut wood cabinets (HPL Unilin). For the tables we choose a combination of wenge stained wood (Moooi), ceramics (Mush) and glass (Montis), materials we also see in the light fixtures (from Penta, Heinen and Serax). The room divider was tailor-made and designed by us. It is t-shaped and serves several functionalities. First of all it seperates the workspace from the rest of the room, creating a tranquil space without taking away the natural daylight. The desk is build-in and it provides space to store books and files. The tv, sound system and lighting are integrated in a way that cables are not visible and there’s ample space for the family’s art objects and decoration. The room divider will be constructed using Decolegno decor chipboard in a walnut-look. The desk will have a brown leather-look, matching the leather Gerrit Rietveld Steltman chair. (Text will continue below the images.)
