New kitchen layout advice for an existing home

A young couple with 2 children is quite happy where they currently live, but they do not think the current layout of their home downstairs very convenient. They would like a new kitchen and were looking for someone who could help them with the design and setup. The kitchen island in particular is currently standing in the way of improving the layout. They want a kitchen where they can live in with sufficient storage space and a practical layout. They would like to keep their furniture in the seating area, but the dining table can be changed if that’s better for the design (text will continue below the images).

We made 3 proposals for them in which the dining area and kitchen area is used more efficiently.

For option 1 we placed the kitchen in the same area as it is now. However, we have designed  it in a U-shape, so the island is no longer necessary. We moved the cupboard, which was in the kitchen, to the space opposite the door, where you enter from the hallway. This creates space to move the dining area more towards the bay window, making it a more spacious. There is now also room in the bay window for extra seating, ideal for reading or playing (text will continue below the images).

For option 2 we moved the kitchen unit to the long wall of the ground floor. As a result, the kitchen now forms the connection between the living room and the dining area. The nice thing about this layout is that the dining area can be placed in front of the window. In addition, there is sufficient space in the corner, where the kitchen used to be, for a cupboard. The kitchen will also feel more spacious, because the walking space around it is a lot bigger than in the current situation (text will continue below the images).

For option 3, we have again placed the kitchen in the same corner as it is now. However, we used the other, shorter wall. The kitchen is in a L-shaped setup and the cooking area is offset slightly to the rear. This is partly in front of the bay window, creating space for a small bar opposite the cooking area. Since this takes up less space than the current kitchen island, the dining area, can be moved further towards the bay window. As in option 1, the cupboard is also located along the long wall, opposite the door (text will continue below the images).

3 different options, all offering more space and a better layout. The nuance lies in the arrangement of the dining area and the feeling of spaciousness. The choice will therefore depend on what best suits the family’s way of life. Does a seat or a bar in the bay window add enough value? Or is the preference to have more space around the kitchen and the dining area placed in front of the window?
